From: Red Category: Books Date: 22 October 2006 Time: 08:19 AM Review: The book is written in the 1930's left wing New York by a woman and I thought it might be good, a change, a woman's slant. Actually the first chapter was not bad, I got off to a good start, glad to have bought a decent book. It reminded me of Elfride Jelinek in part - word association, stream of consciousness etc. (I haven't read Ulysses so don't have that point of reference and have read Woolf in a while) - not so brutal, not so good as E.J but still nice and refreshing. But soon these word associations just became habit, repetitive and pointless and hammy, I wished she'd leave them out - her natural writing, that she had no doubt been brought up to understand as good writing, was better, more fluid, less forced. Half way through (my night) the book I went to sleep, and from then I had to force my self to the end. May be if she had lived beyond 40 she could have written something better. She died of cancer.
