From: Pipsqueak Category: Art Date: 16 October 2006 Time: 10:27 AM Review: This is a poor review. The writer has not even bothered to check what sort of skeleton he was looking at (a whale's not a shark's). I wouldn't call the paintings post-modern, let alone post-post-modern. The use of gold leaf is reminiscent of religious manuscripts, and the emphasis on composition harks back to formalism. I am surprised that someone who knows nothing about art (such as the last reviewer) was seemingly so offended by this work - after all, they are very attractive paintings that would look good on a living room wall... Delicate, precisely set out compositions, with harmonious colours....And dismissing 'Dark Wave' as just a drawing on a skeleton is missing several points - such as the vast amount of time that must have been spent setting out these intricate geometric designs on the skeleton, and then drawing them. The skeleton is hung at a level that is low enough for the viewer to duck under the flippers/jawbones and look at it from the inside - at which point you notice that the entire thing has been covered - every dip and crevice of what is innately a beautiful object. It is a difficult thing for an artist to compete with the beauty of nature, and here Orozco has made a very successful effort. I would recommend this exhibition to anyone.
