From: Weekender Category: Books Date: 03 August 2006 Time: 08:27 AM Review: The conclusion is that McEwan is best for his gripping plots rather than for his writerly style - what I mean is that some writers write in this way that they think writers should write - description ends up as some idea of how we see the world rather than how it really is. While it is meant to be a true description of how it is in fact all we get is convention and stereotype, no effective bone chilling description where I might feel awed by the writers skill and insightful picking out of detail. Really he should n't try and do this. So this book only becomes good at the end when, after such a dull build up, all the action begins and since it is the end, it ends pretty soon afterwards.
