A newly-created project space, within the existing gallery space, will present exhibitions opening on the same night as exhibitions in the main space, jointly creating a dynamic and flexible exhibitions platform. Ismail Erbil and Patrick Michalopoulos Private View: Friday,15th October, 6-9 p.m Exhibition dates: 15th October – 7th November 2010 First Thursdays late opening, 4th November, 6-9 p.m The first Schwartz Gallery Project Space exhibition introduces the work of London-based artists Ismail Erbil and Patrick Michalopoulos. Working with sculpture and installation, Erbil and Michalopoulos have shared a studio in Hackney Wick for the past three years and their practice has evolved in close proximity, displaying a cross-over of formal and conceptual concerns. ISMAIL ERBIL Ismail Erbil’s practice investigates the body and its relationship to hybrid cultures. Ideas of gender, domestic interiors and traditional ceremonies as experienced in the artist’s own Kurdish/Turkish background and upbringing in London inform his practice. Erbil’s installations reference both traditional and non-traditional uses of materials that create an in-between space for re-interpreting the body, creating other-worldly reconstructions of the self. Ismail Erbil completed a B.A in fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London in 2002. Recent group shows include A-L-L-O-T-M-E-N-T-S and Wonder Island at Schwartz Gallery, Across the Grain at Forty Hall, London and his work has been shown at the Powerhouse in Brisbane, Australia. He is a part-time lecturer at the London College of Fashion and is the co-founder of Schwartz Gallery. ismailerbil.tumblr.com PATRICK MICHALOPOULOS Patrick Michalopoulos explores contemporary urban identities by intersecting and layering seemingly incongruous structural paradigms to create ‘D.I.Y identity-search-engines’. The resulting sculptural objects interpret ancient historical implements for measuring and mapping the cosmos for instance, D.I.Y structures made from everyday materials picked-up in and around waste-strewn industrial areas of the metropolis and the virtual architecture of on-line social networking sites. Quantities measured and discovered are imprecise and often open to interpretation questioning notions of identity, social cohesion and technology. Patrick Michalopoulos completed a B.A in sculpture at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London in 2002. Recent group shows include A-L-L-O-T-M-E-N-T-S and Wonder Island at Schwartz Gallery, and Across the Grain at Forty Hall, London. His work has been shown at the Powerhouse, Soapbox Gallery and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, all in Brisbane, Australia. He is the co-founder of Schwartz Gallery. http://patrickmichalopoulos.tumblr.com/ http://www.schwartzgallery.co.uk/site/?page_id=8
