Review

Now he is gone, Updike, his writing seems so much more precious, that intelligence, flawed by misogyny and other prejudices sure, will not sound again. The hymns to the towns of america, to middle class mores and sex, seem now like some fading brilliant history of places we wish we could have been, or perhaps visited. All the sadder is his recognition of time passing, now his has gone. Franzen, buzzing with some of the life of now, of mobility and networks, is a pale shadow.
