My friend told me that these guys playing on my doorstep was the musical equivalent of Sigmar Polke giving me a tutorial a week before he died. Or something like that. I bought a ticket.................................................................................. Various jazz fans, funny to think of Kingsley Amis as such, not that hip, and other non-descript Dalstonites seemed reasonably excited by the Sun Ra coming to town. Perhaps the long spell of good weather has messed with my head, as I am a person who falls asleep ten mins into any musical performance, even by the equivalent of Pablo Picasso..............................................Afficianados, eating avocados, sat on fold up seats, and waited an hour (drank beer and coffee) before the Arkestra began in their sequinned shawls. My friend toll my the conductor is 190 years old, which is impressive. .... I bumped into another friend who was impressed that I was there. I was pleased about casting off my stereotype. The music was loud enough for me not to fall asleep, the guys had really nice voices but most of the time they just made a big wordless rhythmic noise, livening up the jazz with odd soundmakers like bird whistles. I closed my eyes, but could not nod off. I felt it was a pity that we were not eating dinner or dancing, it seemed like nice music to do something to, the crowd were palsied, shaking a foot or a leg, tappping a finger, one or two, the usual weirdos/heroes danced on their own. ................................................At half-time I left.
