a new contemporary art gallery based in arundel, lovely place arundel and the new gallery forged into old beams and wonky walls suppies the authentic character assicated with its history... anybody aware or neale's work will know that he works mainly in painting yet his subject matter is undefined by usual critique.. that means his work isn't supported by the interlectual crutch and certainly doesn't entertain symbolism... the low lighting of the 1st floor entertains a atmosphere and feel of looking at art which comes with a more expansive institution... with american flags and medium size works facing you the whole area brings to your attention what you have been missing in art... yeah bold statement perhaps but i like to call it how i see it... this gallery brings some of the best elements out in neale's works, although he doesn't like it being known has 'his work'... imagination is an important word in art but hardly ever used these days to describe contemporary art, well this is what neale has said.... upstairs has the biggest painting i have seen for a while... 'hugh hefner eats meat' measures 9ft x 8ft and comands over the show proberly like hugh hefner would do at his mansion... dare i say it this image at the centre of the painting doesn't contain conventional clothing of dressing gown and slippers either... rather a more exotic pallete of weaving colours drips and lines that are woven togother as a tapestry... ths show contains over a dozen new works and all full fill what i think is great in art... i understand that neale howells has exhibited through is native country wales and frequently shows in london with the john martin gallery.... how long will it be before howells work goes to the next level...i suppose it depends on who sees it.. for now though we can enjoy what may become sort after pieces of the future.... how do you judge a good piece of art..? as neale would ask, well i say 'go and see'... NEALE HOWELLS exhibition 17th May – 26th June 2010. gallery open Tuesday – Saturday and bank holiday Mondays 11.00am – 6.00pm and by appointment t: 01903 884468 email info@square1art.co.uk www.square1art.co.uk www.jmlondon.com
