Not that Germany didn't have abstraction, back in the 60s, even in the East, naturlich - what they didn't really get was Minimalism though, by the lorry load - and as a consequence - Pattern & Decoration (P&D). But don't tell Amerikans that, they'll burst into tears at the very idea. And this is why Polke's deft knight's move, assimilating patterned fabrics as grounds or supports even by the end of the 60s, suddenly looks so acute, outside Germany, so awry inside it. Pop + Minimalism = P&D.
