In the 1960s he was a counter-cultural hero for The Sot Weed Factor. He is a good writer unfortunately he can't resist reminding you of his research and love of detail and as a consequence they can get a bit lumbering. But then I'd say the same thing about Tolstoy and Dickens so it's a temperament thing as much as anything. He can be howlingly funny though, and I haven't read any for ages, about as long since I read Roland (who I never found half as amusing). But maybe it's time for a revival of John. I'm a bigger fan of Donald though.
