Rabbit at Rest by John Updike

The Rabbit books are Updike's purest (dirtiest) masterpieces, although couples is pretty great. Through Angstrom we see America in all its glorious shabby history. I haven't read the whole lot in years, but the final proper finish to the series (there is rather wooden postscript novella) is encompassing, sensual, beautiful, sad. Makes you happy to be alive in all its salted nuttiness, and you put the book down and rush out into the fresh air and breathe deeply.
