Review

An absolutely brilliant book, and Updike's death makes it seem even more precious. The sensations of a life are minutely felt, and for a while (despite its flawed sexual and racial stereotypes, it's confusing whether they are updikes or the characters') you are fully immersed in a perfectly preserved world that never was and you could never have been part of. The genius is that you feel bereaved when you put the book down. Needs to be read slowly.
